Communication, connection, and sharing of ideas

This very traditional form is a wheku - a representation of a powerful force or influence in our lives. The protruding tongue represents the power of kōrero - communication - to connect people, to clarify ideas, and to bring about understanding.

The long strokes of the chisel are called haehae, and the short angled lines in between are pākati,  together forming an ancient design.

A timeless symbol

A tiki is a kaitiaki (spiritual guardian) and taonga (intergenerational treasure). It represents a human form and is one of the most recognisable symbols in Māori culture.

A tiki can tell the stories of generations - their values, characters, and memories, to be passed down through the years for safekeeping.

It's hard to find traditional taonga (gifts) at affordable pricing.

Michael Matchitt's range of hand-made ceramics means you can give a truly authentic gift - a gift with a recognisable name and real whakapapa (history) even when a one-off, hand-carved piece is out of your reach.

These ceramics start their lives as wood, carved by hand with chisel, not power tools or sandpaper. Michael Matchitt then collaborates with ceramic artisans to produce a mould, and from that the final product is cast.

All ceramics come beautifully boxed - well protected for shopping - and include a description card so the receiver understands the meaning of their gift.

These stunning artworks are very lightweight and perfect for shipping overseas or carrying in your luggage.

If you'd like to carry Michael Matchitt ceramics in your shop or gallery, please contact us with information about your business.

If you'd like to buy a quantity of these (say, for conference gifts), please contact us for a volume discount.
